I feel betrayed by George W. Bush. He had a golden opportunity to transform our nation with a long-lasting conservative legacy and instead he dismantled and destroyed the Reagan inheritance.
First, it was the war in Iraq. I could not understand this decision from the beginning. What is a conservative doing entering into a preemptive war of choice? What is a conservative doing adopting a philosophy of social engineering and unnecessary international entanglements? I honestly thought they must know something, there must be weapons of mass destruction, but none were found.
But it's more than just the war. There is also Mr. Bush's fiscal irresponsibility. Mr. Bush seems as capable of vetoing a spending bill as he is of properly pronouncing the word "nuclear." On top of the war and deficit spending, Mr. Bush also displayed incompetence in his handling of Katrina and insanity in his unwillingness to fire Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. I also had to endure the fiasco of his nomination of Harriet Meyers to the Supreme Court. Just what was he thinking?
As if all this was not enough to make me reject the Republican Party, I add to it the way the Republicans are running their midterm election campaigns. Instead of telling loyal supporters that they have messed up and will do better, they have chosen to scare us with images of Democratic Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Charlie Rangel taking power. I find this tactic both manipulative and insulting to my intelligence. The Republican Party is treating their base like a bunch of idiots.
Frankly, the Republican Party is in utter disarray and acting out of sheer desperation. The latest indication is the inordinate hoopla that Republicans are trying to create over Sen. John Kerry's most recent slipup. Do the Republicans really think I will vote for them because of John Kerry's remarks? Is this the best argument they can muster for voting Republican?
