by Mike Hall, Nov 4, 2006
The people of New Orleans and those throughout the entire Gulf Coast haven’t forgotten about the deadly and devastating Hurricane Katrina that killed nearly 1,700 people, destroyed tens of thousands of homes and caused some $80 billion in damage over 90,000 square miles more than a year ago.
So how can the Bush administration push Katrina and its victims out of its mind? The Center for American Progress’ report, Katrina: The Forgotten Disaster, explores the still monumental task to rebuild Gulf Coast lives and towns more than a year later. It also examines the Bush administration’s failure to mount a credible, thorough and sustained recovery and rebuilding effort.
During the White House media blitz marking the one-year anniversary, the Bush administration used photo ops and a laundry list of rebuilding promises to assure the public that it was deeply committed to rebuilding. Too bad the follow-through is lacking.
