Meet the 'New Bush' (Froomkin / WaPo)

By Dan Froomkin
Special to washingtonpost.com
Thursday, November 9, 2006; 1:06 PM

... Meet the New Bush: Owning up to all sorts of unpleasant realities; Speaking well of Democrats; Vowing to act in a bipartisan fashion while acknowledging voter skepticism on that point and pledging to overcome it with deeds; Self-deprecating, rather than bullying ...

So is this New Bush to be taken at his word?

It probably depends on whether you think the president's badly eroded credibility has been restored by his admission that he lied during the campaign -- or whether that just adds to the damage.

Because possibly the most startling aspect of a consequential press conference on a incredibly tumultuous day was Bush's repeated acknowledgment that things he said when he was campaigning were either no longer operative -- or were outright deceptions ...

3. Pffftt!!! Watch what they do!
12 hours after: Announce a week (or longer) decision to let Rummy have more time with his family. Install a Spook with suspicious background to replace him. One that already has a 50/50 batting average on Senate confirmations.

24 hours after: Huddle with your party leadership to let them know the plan (they ARE still in charge until January afterall, so why not make the most of it!). Between breakfast but before lunch, publicly challenge the New Democratic Leadership (who will not be installed until January) with a choice. A: Give a thumbsup to the Bush Surveillance Act or B: Fillibuster. Then have lunch and a shit-eating grin on your face while speaking of bi-partisanship.

Notice that Pelosi didn't say the word "bi-partisanship" in her appearance with Bush? She said work together to "build confidence". Smart lady!

9. Show me a liar and I'll show you a thief.
In Bush's case, show me a mass-murdering warmonger and I'll show you a traitor.
