I am re-energized: A call to arms to progressives worldwide!
Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 11:17 PM by ballaratocker
As of 8th of November, (the 9th here in China, it has become official. There is such a thing as karma in this world. Those who cheat to win, who denigrate others and their beliefs, those who feel that God excuses their actions no matter how immoral, have been forced to eat humble pie. For so long, I thought that there was no justice in this world if this group were not made called to account for their actions but finally they have had their comeuppance.
As an Australian, I surely would not have felt the defeats the Democrats took in 2000 and 2004 as powerfully as those Americans who opposed Bush but I can guarantee you that I was hurt. As hurt as I have been during Australia's ten year reign of conservative government (which hopefully come next election will end too). With Bush's re-election in the U.S., I almost felt that the world had gone nuts. I thought, 'How could decent, independent people vote for a man whose 'accomplishments' were either appealing to extreme right wing partisans or abject failures disguised as successes by excessive political spin and clever marketing?' However, the 7th restored my faith in the reasoning of the American people and the goodness of mankind. As the title of this post said, 'I am re-energized'. Six years of right wing spin masquerading as common sense sapped my spirit but with the Democrats taking over the Congress, I feel ready to re-enter the political fray.
Therefore, on this web log, I now make the following promises:
1) I will try my best to help build the world wide progressive movement with others : I feel that since a lot of the world wide right wing's 'bold ideas' have been discredited (note: Having a vision isn't necessarily a good thing if the vision is a defective one), there is a chance for lefties and progressives world wide to build an international progressive movement. South America has begun moving in this direction due to years of defective policy coming from Washington. Governments who supported the Iraq mission are being punished and will continue to be punished. To this end, I promise that I will now do my best to help progressives world wide into positions of power through whatever means I can. At the moment, as I live in China, these options are limited. However, be it donating money, posting on this blog, contributing to discussions with other progressive, I will do it.
2) I will actively educate myself on the issues that matter . For too long, especially when I lived in Australia, I often shot my mouth off about things I really didn't know about (and probably still do). However, I am now going to do my best to find out what really matters to people around the world and how we as progressives can come up with solutions to many of the problems that face people around the world. Considering I live in Asia, and in a developing country to boot, I feel my starting point is a good one.
In one years time, I will revisit this post and I will attempt to hold myself to these promises. I will do my best to succeed in this as I feel with the repudiation of Bush in America, our window of opportunity to change the world is well and truly open. The world follows America and, for better or worse, follows it's lead. With the U.S. rejecting neo-conservatism, I can only hope the world is not too far behind. While I do understand that the election in the U.S. was probably a case of conservative ideas losing as opposed to progressive ones winning, most political revolutions are begun by the downfall of a faulty ideology with necessity demanding that a more efficient one overtake it (i.e. FDR creating a 30 year progressive coalition). With this in mind, I call on all lefties/progressives/liberals to begin coming up with that alternative!
Because you can count me in on this one!

2. Ever since Tuesday, I have remained watchful...
but ever so much more at ease. We have a lot to do, but hopefully we have a receptive legislative branch who will hear us.

The Progressive Caucus is at an all-time high, and we have at least 2 years to repair what has been ruined.

Let's all join in and make hasty progress to show the world what progressives stand for, and how our values will make a difference in their lives.

3. That is exactly how I feel, and I LIVE here
Yes it is our duty to carry this progressiveness forward and I also pledge to do my part.

Welcome to DU ballaratocker. It is good to hear this election shored up hope outside the country, because it sure revived hope here.
