Election affects McConnell's post

On Wednesday morning, Republicans in the Senate are to go behind closed doors and pick their new leader.

Despite the drubbing the GOP took in Tuesday's elections, the outcome of the leadership balloting will be no surprise. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has been quietly seeking the post for months without opposition.

But McConnell, the current majority whip, was positioning to be majority leader, succeeding Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn. Instead, the Kentuckian will be minority leader.

"Mitch McConnell has got to be one of the most unhappy men in America," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.
