Lieberman Might Jump Ship
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 10:41 PM by Matilda
I had the misfortune of watching Joe Lieberman on Meet the Press Sunday.

He was his usual, insufferable, unctuous self.

(snip)

Lieberman claims to be in the center, though he won 70 percent of the Republican vote, which gives you a better indication of his leanings.

And he may tip over soon.

If I'm reading this correctly, Lieberman, a Democrat who regularly voted with the Republicans on
a range of issues, lost the endorsement of his Party and ran as an Independent against the endorsed
candidate, is now likely to be crucial to the Democrats getting any of their legislation
through, giving him more power than if he were a straight-voting Democrat who wouldn't need to be
wooed.

How ironic.

2. If he switches, he will lose his place as the most courted person
in the Senate to stuck as one of the guys. Lieberman is not about to do that. He'll just keep threatening. JMHO

3. Who cares? The house majority is what really counts.

The bastard has always voted with the republicans whenever it mattered anyway.

4. Don't fret about it.
He's just a whore, and there's nothing anyone can do about that.

5. You have found the perfective adjective for Joe
"unctuous". Joe is Walking Unctua.

6. Lieberman is the most powerful senator now.
He would, however, be considered a liberal by Republicans and completely unacceptable by the far-right. He is in the best and worst of all possible worlds. In the end, Democrats are likely to treat him more favorably than Republicans. Democrats don't punish senators that don't vote the party line. Republicans demand that senators toe their line. It is unlikely that Lieberman could vote the Republican party line any better than he does the Democratic one.

13. He's Just the Biggest Trouble-Maker In The Senate
A powerful Senator can move public opinion and public policy his way. I doubt that Lieberman could persuade his own mother at this point, if she were holding an opposing opinion.

8. Why wouldn't he jump ship?
The man is a solid conservative and he knows that if he goes to the Republican side, he will ensure that he will keep this country on the same course as Bush had it on.

We can't win for losing. The only thing that will trump Lieberman, is if we can get a moderate Republican to go Dem.

14. He wouldn't
because he'd lose his seniority -- he's already said so.

But he'll vote with the Republicans, as he always has.

10. If he switches doesn't he lose the Homeland Security Department
Chairmanship? Also I don't think his defection would change the majority so he has no real reason for switching.
