Scientists crack Neanderthal DNA - Reuters News Agency
Scientists crack Neanderthal DNA
Research conducted on 38,000-year-old bone fragment

Shows species separated from humans 370,000 years ago

"WASHINGTON—Neanderthals are truly distant relatives of modern humans who interbred rarely, if at all, with our own immediate ancestors, say researchers who sequenced DNA from the leg bone of a Neanderthal man who died 38,000 years ago.

They estimate that modern humans and Neanderthals split from a common ancestor at least 370,000 years ago, and possibly 500,000 years ago, although the two share 99.95 per cent of their DNA.

"We see no evidence of mixing 40,000, 30,000 years ago in Europe. We don't exclude it, but see no evidence," Edward Rubin of the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute in California, who led one study, told reporters.

This conflicts with evidence from other researchers, including a team who said earlier this month that humans may have inherited a brain gene from Neanderthals.

2. So now we know where Republicans come from? With this DNA info, can we come up with
a cure for them?

7. Well actually,
I had a anthropology professor who said Neanderthals might be where white people developed from. I always though it was kind of funny.

No proof mind, just some speculation from what I understand. He didn't necessarily think it was true, but he threw it out there because it was a "Ethnic Americans" class. Bit of a rabble rouser that guy.

8. unfair to Neanderthals! They supposedly had melodic voices ...
Much more pleasant to hear than Bush's repetitive grunting, roaring, and "heh-heh-heh" cackling.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1462226,00.html

The new image has emerged from two studies of the vocal apparatus and anatomy of the creatures that occupied Europe between 200,000 and 35,000 years ago.

Neanderthal voices were loud, womanly and probably highly melodic — not the roars and grunts previously assumed by most researchers. Stephen Mithen, professor of archeology at Reading University and author of one of the studies, said: “What is emerging is a picture of an intelligent and emotionally complex creature whose most likely form of communication would have been part language and part song.”

5. Finally a reason!
a team who said earlier this month that humans may have inherited a brain gene from Neanderthals.
This explains the Republican party. They carry the predominant neanderthal brain gene.
