Vietnam rolls out red carpet for Bush

Vietnam rolls out red carpet for Bush
By Amy Kazmin and Caroline Daniel

Vietnam’s communist rulers will on Friday suppress their irritation at the US rejection of a trade bill and roll out a red carpet for President George W. Bush. They are keen to deepen a relationship crucial to their country’s future prosperity.

But the second US presidential visit since the end of the Vietnam war has spawned little of the public enthusiasm generated by Bill Clinton’s ground-breaking trip six years ago.

<snip>

Such lukewarm sentiment towards the White House’s current occupant seems widely shared on the streets of Hanoi, where questions about Mr Bush’s visit are met with platitudes, rather than genuine enthusiasm. “We welcome Mr Bush as our visitor,” said a young employee of a securities company, before acknowledging, “I liked Mr Clinton so much more.”

7. President Junior's "Lesson" from the Vietnam War is . . .
we would have won if we had just "stayed the course," but he did not use those exact words. He said "we'll succeed unless we quit."
