TIME: Bush Takes Charge on Iraq: WH wants to make clear Baker is not calling the shots
The President Takes Charge on Iraq
On Scene: As Bush prepares for a much-anticipated meeting with his counterpart in Baghdad, the White House wants to make clear that James Baker is not calling the shots
By MIKE ALLEN/TALLINN, ESTONIA

Get used to seeing the Four Seasons Amman. That's the site of Thursday's breakfast and news conference for President George W. Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and the U.S. networks are sending their news anchors there, ensuring massive coverage of an event that the White House has said is unlikely to produce any major announcement or development. But the White House, which is eager to show that the President is focused intently on Iraq, is welcoming the coverage.

On the second day of a four-day trip abroad, Bush said in Estonia on Tuesday morning that he plans to bring up the current spate of violence, which is so fierce that NBC News this week began using the term "civil war" when reporting on the conflict. "My question to him will be: What do we need to do to succeed?" Bush said at a news conference at the ornate Bank of Estonia, this Baltic nation's central bank. "What is the strategy for dealing with the sectarian violence? I will assure him that we will do everything in our power to make sure that they are able to establish a safe haven in Iraq. I will ask him what is required and what is your strategy to be a country which can govern itself and sustain itself."

Perhaps wisely, Bush is not offering himself as the Answer Man. Instead, his aim is to remind Iraqis that he wants to support them in solving their problems, not taking ownership of them. National Security Adviser Steve Hadley told reporters on Air Force One on the way to Estonia that Bush will be a good listener at the meeting. "We're not at the point where the President is going to be in a position to lay out a comprehensive plan at this point," Hadley said. Instead, Republican officials have said, the President plans to announce "a way forward" for Iraq in coming weeks based on input from Congress, an administration-wide review and the Baker commission.

Bush's aides have begun to chafe at the idea that Baker is needed as some sort of savior for Iraq. Hadley made it clear that the President hopes his Jordan foray will erase any such notion. "It's important, I think," Hadley said, "for the President to send the message to Prime Minister Maliki that while he is listening to all of these voices for ideas, is open to ideas, that in the end of the day to reassure Prime Minister Maliki that it is the President who will be crafting the way forward on Iraq and to reassure Prime Minister Maliki it will be done in a way that is cooperative with Iraq, rather than imposed on Iraq." In other words: Baker is a consultant, not calling the shots....

24. "Perhaps wisely..." PERHAPS WISELY???? bush???
Time magazine's reporters on this story need to have their heads examined. "Perhaps wisely.."???????????????????? WISELY???????????????

Dear God, they're STILL trying to put lipstick on the pig. STILL!

There's only one good thing I see in this particular disaster: if bush remains stubborn and unmoved, while the evidence mounts and the generals keep turning and the networks bail out and start calling it the civil war it is (and worse), and the war grows more horrible, hopeless, bloody, and unpopular while he keeps his heels dug in, seems to me there will be those in positions of power and prominence who will feel compelled to start asking about IMPEACHMENT AND REMOVAL FROM OFFICE. If the only thing keeping us stuck in the quicksand is bush, with everything else saying "go" while he says "stay," at some point we're just going to be forced to move without him, or in spite of him. It may be that, to get us out of Iraq, he will HAVE TO BE removed from power. AND cheney, also. The circumstances may force the hands of Congress - AND the people.

Pssssst - hey, george, keep it up!

28. Well, perhaps...
you know, "perhaps" always, by default, allows for "perhaps NOT!" We wouldn't want TIME's staff to start drawing any conclusions, now would we?

Another possibility - permishaps.

With our troops and Iraqi citizens in the middle of it.

If republicans had any sense, ANY SENSE AT ALL, THEY would be moving for impeachment, and I mean, like RIGHT FUCKING NOW.

25. They may feel compelled to do just that before very long, if this schmuck
won't budge. Sometimes, when the impediment refuses to clear the road on its own, you have to move it out of the way, yourself. That is, if you expect to continue moving forward, rather than staying stuck.

9. There's one sentence in particular that just made me laugh...
<snip>
Perhaps wisely, Bush is not offering himself as the Answer Man.
<snip>

1. I would never use the word wisely in any sentence (or paragraph or whatever) when referring to Chimpy.

2. I would feel safe betting my next paycheck on the fact that he's never had the right answer to anything in his miserable life. (And I need my paycheck. I got robbed at the grocery store last Monday and I'm broke. But I'd still be the check on this.)

3. The Iraqis didn't have a problem until he decided to prove to the world that he could play with the big boys and be a 'war pResident'.

There are so many other things wrong with this article, I don't think I have enough lifetime left to enumerate them all. But those are the biggest ones.

Talk about mixed messages:
- Baker with a thorough analysis and recommendations
- We're not necessarily going to listen to Baker

- Baker with a thorough analysis and recommendations
- We're not in a position to lay out a comprehensive plan

- We're not pulling out troops until the mission is done
- Iraq is a sovereign nation

- The President is in charge
- "What is your strategy?"

- No major announcement
- News anchors invited and welcome

- President is focused on Iraq's problems
- White House welcomes press coverage/photo ops.

30. Great scatterbrained prez refuses to take responsibilty but insists
no one else can either, buts responsibility on iraqis to fix iraq, while not giving them control.

Everyone see where this misadminsistration is going with this - It's IRAQS responsibility and their fault for the whole war. That's his execuse when we try him for war crimes. Which, btw, actually does need to happen for America to gain any shred of integrity.

Bush needs to go by way of Millovich. I can't believe he doesn't know it's going to come down on him.

34. WH probably didn't plan on Al Maliki standing Georgie up last night.....
or Talibani overshadowing Georgie by meeting with Big A.......

this whole "Georgie in Charge" trip has been a huge ckusterf**k - it exposed the chimperor as utterly impotent and powerless in the middle east. He arrogantly and ignorantly set the wheels in motion, and has handed Iran a stunning victory. Big A is playing his hand brilliantly at this point.
