Almost a decade ago I called a pizza place, a national chain, for a pizza. Normal type stuff until I asked tried to order my pizza with "extra cheese"
I got the following response "We are out of extra cheese"
I then tried to explain to this young man (assumption there) that it wasn't a different kind of cheese but just more of the same. There was a pause on the other end of the line and then I heard "out of extra cheese".
That appears to be where we are in this unbelieveably disasterous war on Iraq-I say "unbelieveably disasterous" because even those of us who have opposed it from the first time we heard about it (summer '02) never thought it would be this horribly unplanned and mismanaged by the supposed leadership.
The "surge" or "escalation" or "augmentation" is nothing new it is just more of the same. It is not an assumption to realize that the end result has been known from before this mess started and more cheese won't fix that. It just gives it a different taste.

1. That's funny and a great analogy |
|
Indeed this surge is just more of the same. I can see George calling up the Pentagon.. "can you put some "Extra Death" on that for me?"

3. Heh -- reminds me of a story that went around my workplace about the same time |
|
A few of my cow-orkers went into a local pizza place and ordered a large pizza with pepperoni on half. The clerk smiles at them and asks, "which half?" The guy placing the order, being a complete smartass himself, says "the left half" without missing a beat. The clerk doesn't crack a smile but carefully writes "pepperoni on the LEFT half" on the order.
The guys go grab a table and watch the cooks pass around the order and chuckle. When the pizza comes up, my friend goes to get it. He takes one look, smirks at the clerk and says, "Hey, I asked for pepperoni on the left half," expecting the guy to get the joke.
Instead the clerk says, "Damn, sorry 'bout that," and before my friend can say anything the clerk grabs the pizza and throws it in the trash. They had to wait for another pizza, but at least they got a round of free sodas.

5. I can see how they could be out of extra cheese |
|
Perhaps they only had enough cheese to cover the number of pizzas they knew would be sold during the evening. If they dipped into that stock, they wouldn't be able to sell pizzas at all, toward the end. So yes, they could be out of extra cheese.
