GOP VIPs ponder David Iglesias fallout
Some state Republicans fear former U.S. attorney's claims may hurt party

Everyone with half a stake in New Mexico politics had been waiting months for U.S. Attorney David Iglesias to put his cards on the table.

Nobody expected Rep. Heather Wilson and Sen. Pete Domenici to read 'em and weep.

But as Iglesias, who resigned this week, strode into the national spotlight this week amid allegations that the two Albuquerque Republicans played a role in his dismissal, it was Domenici and Wilson seemingly left looking for an exit.

"If I was Heather Wilson, I'd be thinking about taking a long trip to Baghdad, where the conditions are a little more subdued," said former Gov. Dave Cargo.

Cargo, a Republican, was only half-joking.

2. Yesterday's article in the same paper was good too:
http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2007/mar/02/rep-heather-wilson-grilled-reporters-role-firing/

A brief news conference called today by Rep. Heather Wilson on veterans affairs devolved into a grilling over questions about former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias.

She referred to Iglesias' ouster as she has before, as a personnel issue within the Department of Justice.

When asked how an alleged phone call to a U.S. attorney could be construed as a personnel matter, she replied that she "did not have any additional comment at this time."

Wilson offered the same response to a number of other questions on the same topic.

She would not comment on a report published Thursday identifying her and Sen. Pete Domenici as having called Iglesias in October.

...

After being grilled about Iglesias, she asked if there were any additional questions about the VA. When there were none, she left.

(They go on to quote a political "expert" saying "Domenici is so loved in New Mexico, it's hard to imagine this would be a major threat to his campaign two years out from an election," but it is tantalizing to think that this is the state with a Democratic governor...)

3. "Pajama" Pete? I love it! Hadn't heard that story before. Not that there is anything wrong with
wearing pajamas in public.
