La Opinión Calls for Alberto Gonzales to Step Down
La Opinion, Posted: Mar 31, 2007
LOS ANGELES – An editorial in the Spanish-language newspaper La Opinión has called for the resignation of U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Gonzales has lost his credibility, one of the basic values necessary to guarantee the integrity of justice as the highest national authority charged with respecting the law, editors write in March 27 edition of the newspaper. The firing of eight U.S. attorneys makes editors doubt his capacity to separate his loyalty to President Bush from his duty to the American people. However, the straw that broke the camel’s back was the contradiction between his testimony that he was not aware of what his subordinates were doing and his active participation in the meetings as demonstrated by internal federal communications. La Opinión didn’t support the historic nomination of the Latino former judge to the Department of Justice two years ago, citing Gonzales’ justification of the expansion of presidential powers, the use of torture and legal limbo for Guantanamo detainees. Gonzales failed at his job, and for the good of the country, he should step down from his post, editors write. “It’s no surprise that the president is defending his friend,” the editorial concludes, “but restoring the nation’s confidence in the Department of Justice is more important than personal friendship.”
