Porn dominates Saudi mobile use
From the BBC

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6592123.stm

Up to 70% of files exchanged between Saudi teenagers' mobile phones contain pornography, according to a study in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom.

The study quoted in Arab News focussed on the phones of teenagers detained by religious police for harassing girls.

The same researcher also found that 88% of girls say they have been victims of harassment using Bluetooth technology.

Saudi Arabia has toughened penalties for misuse of mobile phones which challenge its strict social traditions.

"The flash memory of mobile phones taken from teenagers showed 69.7% of 1,470 files saved in them were pornographic and 8.6% were related to violence," said report author Professor Abdullah al-Rasheed.

So much for the wing-nut theory that if we don't teach teens about sex, they'll avoid it.

1. In fact, this is a
tangible illustration of what happens when sexuality is repressed.

2. Well, at least they're not stoning the girls
for being "hussies" or whatever usually happens in very conservative countries. Other than that, is anyone really surprised about this? I mean they are in their teen years, so stuff like this is bound to happen.

3. The conclusion's not supported by the data.
Of course, it's a journalism major talking about it, so little things like what makes an argument valid may not have been taught in his "physics for poets" course.

It's true for the files saved cell phones of boys that were detained for harrassing girls. It's not necessarily true for the set of all Sa'udi 'teenagers' or even the set of all Sa'udi teenage boys, and probably not even true for the set of files actually sent by the teenaged boys that were detained. "Up to 70% of files exchanged between Saudi teenagers' mobile phones contain pornography" is simply false on its face.

Unfortunately, this study will just make it harder for those using video and camera phones. Why?

Because they alway have crackdowns on such phones: The "guardians" don't like them because they can be used for bad. Anything that can be used for bad and to turn people from the true religion must be banned. This study wll be construed as the BBC summarized it in the headline.

4. I guess the Chinese are not the only ones trying to control networks.

Who could have predicted that humans would use networks to exchange smut?

5. What exactly passes for porn in Saudi Arabia?
I am willing to bet money that it is not the same thing that an American would consider pornographic.
A picture of a woman showing a little to much leg would pass for porn in S.A.
