Support the Troops; Ignore the War
by Bob Patterson | Jun 8 2007

The pundits, who want to disregard the President’s suggestion that all assessments of the surge strategy be held in abeyance until September, are obsessing with stories about the Turkish incursion into Iraq, and the quotes from a military expert (a disgruntle private on KP duty?) that the war isn’t winnable, and are rushing into premature judgments. These liberal pundits are as anxious to get to the surge evaluation process as Paris Hilton is to get to the end of her jail term. Some cynics seem to think that the citizens should be well informed about the particulars of the war; and that putting the details out there, where everybody (including folks in al Qaeda) can see them, is necessary in a democracy. Well, it isn't.

Patriotic citizens and columnists have already realized that the less that details are published, the better the military will be able to do their work. Isn’t it obvious that Ignorance of the details will foil the enemy and make our troops stronger? During World War II, there were many public service ads that advised that talking about military matters was dangerous. "Loose lips sink ships." That philosophy was summed up best by the bumper stickers: "Ignorance is Strength." The liberal media still hasn’t learned that lesson; they give a sing-song retort maintaining that a well informed citizen makes wiser choices at voting time. The next presidential election won’t be held for 16 months. What good would seeing a picture of a soldier, who got wounded in Iraq yesterday, do to help folks select which of the two candidates, who haven’t even been selected yet, would make a better president?

Apparently the liberal media don’t realize that the best way for them to support the troops is to ignore the war. It would, with some cooperation from the commentators, then become a covert war that will not be mentioned on the Nightly News until it’s over. President Bush would make the Victory announcement at the appropriate time and until then, patriotic columnists will write about topics other than the fact that Osama’s encounter with justice (delivered by George W. Bush) has, like the surge evaluation, been postponed and that the WMD’s in Iraq, haven’t been found yet. The fact that things such as Hermann Goering’s art collection or the Lost Dutchman Goldmine haven’t been found doesn’t prove that they don’t exist, does it?

Shouldn’t all patriotic citizens focus on the immigration debate and then be satisfied at the end of it all when nothing is done, rather than quibble about making judgments on the War in Iraq?

Speaking of the war in Iraq, will the liberal press get all worked up about the fact that Prince Bander might be making some money on some arms sales to his own country?

1. Imagine this editorial appearing in a German paper ca. 1940

:eyes: It's always better to have too much oversight than too little.

(and no I am not comparing this war, this country or these soldiers to those of Nazi Germany. Just pointing out blind faith can have some dire consequences.)

2. Wow....just wow.
"Ignorance is Strength" sounds like something straight out of 1984.
