Herbert: Sick State Budgets, Sick Kids
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/09/opinion/09HERB.html

While headlines continue to tell us how great the economy is doing, states across the U.S. are pulling the plug on desperately needed health coverage for low-income Americans, including about a half-million children.

Even as the Bush administration continues its bizarre quest for ever more tax cuts, the states, which by law have to balance their budgets, are cutting vital social programs so deeply that tragic consequences are inevitable.

The cruel reality is that Americans at the top are thriving at the expense of the well-being of those at the bottom and, increasingly, in the middle.

A new report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities shows that 34 states have made potentially devastating cuts over the past two years in public health insurance programs, including Medicaid and the very successful children's health insurance programs known as CHIPS. More cuts are expected this year.

2. tragic
I live in Florida, and they just kicked 35,000 kids off the Healthy Babies Program. In my county alone(Pasco), there are nearly 4,000 homeless students (Qualifier: the reported number was about 3,600).

The sad thing is, we have the money in the state treasury to remedy this, but Jeb refuses to spend it. He just put up $370 MILLION to lure a California bio-med company to relocate to Florida, and will even pay ALL of their salaries for 7 years.

The money to correct health care and the schools are still there, even after this financial atrocity.

Sometimes I have to question my own sanity. Who's crazy? Me or them?:puke:

4. I agree
On one hand, he is focused on cutting money for poor children and people who are so disabled ( like my son ) they are permanently as helpless as children, yet, on the other hand, he pretends to be a Christian, focusing on faith-based programs.

It's as though he misread the bible and thinks Christ said, What you did not do for the major campaign contributors, you did not do for me. This sort of thing convinces me further the Bushes are simply exploiting the cross and are not believers, but so many people are taken in.
