Not what I expected--Republican double-standards regarding Clinton. Nope. Read on:
Steve Casey: "Double standard regarding sexual morality wrong"July 17, 2007
Being one who knows Sen. David Vitter on a first-name basis, I am disturbed by the allegations being thrown his direction. My knowledge of the situation being only what has been said by the media, I certainly cannot say what is and is not true at this point.
That being said, there is something else we need to look at in this matter.
According to the news media, the individual who revealed this alleged information about Vitter was none other than Larry Flynt, the smut king of the world. This is the man who in his lifetime brought pornography to lower levels than the industry had ever seen before.
Flynt says that he is on a mission to reveal hypocrites. Isn't that quite noble of him? Apparently, Flynt, like many others, believes that it is a much worse sin to have high standards and miss the mark of living up to those standards than it is to have no standards at all and live accordingly.
This concept of judging someone according to how well they live up to their own standards rather than whether or not they have any standards at all is a strange twist of modern illogical thought.
Several years ago, I saw an interview with Larry Flynt's wife. At that time, she was the administrator of their multimillion dollar a year porn business. During the interview she stated that she would send eight to 10 new women to Flynt's office every week for his sexual enjoyment. That was Flynt's standard that he lived up to — or should we say he lived down to. This is the man who thinks that he has the right to judge others for not living up to a standard that he rejects for himself. In the eyes of some in our society it is worse to be a hypocrite than to be an outright whoremonger.
Some of us are able to remember back in the mid-1970s when, due to the influence of Jimmy Carter's sister, Ruth Carter Stapleton, Larry Flynt professed to have become a Christian. Though this hit the news really big for several months, his profession was short-lived. Flynt preferred the life which money and sex provided for him as king of the world of smut. Isn't it funny that no one in the media called Flynt a hypocrite during the time he professed to be a Christian while still living the life of the smut king?
I for one am tired of the double standard. If misconduct is wrong for a congressman, which it is, then it is also wrong for Larry Flint or anyone else. If it is wrong for a Republican, which it is, then it is just as wrong for a Democrat.
Yes, it is wrong not to live up to your standards. But, sexual immorality is wrong no matter what your personal standards may be.

There's a comment section below this opinion piece. Feel free to respond to the author there. :)
I must add--the Shreveport Times editor has been great about holding Vitter's feet to the fire. See this:

Still, I think DUers would be doing a great service by commenting on Casey's piece.
