The US has no idea what it has gotten itself into
Dahr Jamail

01/18/04: (ICH) BAGHDAD:- Yesterday we get the news of a US military convoy north of Baghdad hit by a huge IED. A US convoy is searching for IED’s, when a huge bomb explodes under a Bradley, killing 3 US soldiers, and 2 Iraqi Civil Defense personnel.

This morning at 8am, a huge blast shakes my hotel, rattling my windows. At least one suicide car bomber with 1000 pounds of explosives has detonated his bomb at the front entrance of the CPA, killing 23 Iraqis, 2 Americans, and wounding at least 180 others.

US has no idea what it has gotten itself into

1. it's not just the US
whenever I hear what it's like there, I try to imagine the children living in Iraq, what it must be like. My mum described to me the fear she felt hearing bombs drop around her as a child in England. So terrible.

2. That is a sad and unnerving report

I was skimming through Conason's book "Big Lies" while doing laundry tonight. It's a pretty infuriating yet at the same time depressing book. More depressing than anything for me, I think, because I've been immersing myself for so long in the horror of the near absolute power of our present gov't and what has happened, is happening, and will continue to happen in Iraq.

6. Good prediction
I wonder whether the election of a Democratic candidate will change that future. With the exception of Kucinich, I don't really see any major insight into what is going over there. There is a dubious notion that because we invaded, our troops have to stay "until the job is done." Our policy there is a failure, we have to let the Iraqi people sort it out themselves. We should provide aid, not occupation.
