Hallelujah! New York Times Does An Epic Fact-Check Of Rudy's Multiple Falsehoods
November 30, 2007 -- 9:51 AM EST
by: Greg Sargent
Talking Points Memo

As you regulars know, this blog has been obsessing endlessly about the fact that the big news orgs have yet to take a genuinely tough line on Rudy Giuliani's chronic mendacity, which at this point has taken on a soaring, almost operatic quality.

But today The New York Times has come through in a big way, delivering an epic, front-page fact-check of the multiple falsehoods that have been tumbling forth from Rudy since the beginning of Campaign 2008. The piece is just devastating, saying as clearly as one could expect from the Times that Rudy is, well, full of sh-t:

1. How Rudy can lie with a straight face like this baffles me
Last month, in one of his broadsides against "socialized medicine" he claimed that the US survival rate for prostate cancer (of which he is a survivor) is over 80%, while in Great Britain, that crucible of national health care, it's under 50%. Therefore, concludes Rudy, the convoluted, overpriced private US health care system is clearly superior to the government subsidized systems in place in virtually every other industrialized nation. Bullbleep.

As a NY Times op-ed writer (Dowd? Krugman? I forget.) pointed out, the survival rate for prostate cancer in GB is just under 80%. In other words, statistically insignificant from the US rate.

For Rudy to remorselessly spread a blatant lie like his lowers my already shallow opinion of him even deeper.

I hope he DOES get the GOP nod. The more voters learn about his penchant for playing fast and loose with the facts, the less likely they are to vote for him in next year's general election.

2. He's watched repubics lie for eight long years and he thought he could
just jump on the wagon and carry on the tradition. But he and his crazy greedy wife are too well known, and waaaaay to hated, to get away with it. He doesn't have a KKKarl to deal with the media, and he has Kerik hanging on him weighing him down, and he has enemies (too many enemies) who are having the time of their lives getting their paybacks for his abuse.

This is great. Could't happen to a bigger sleezebag.

Well, it could. But I'll be happy seeing Rudy take it in ths shorts for now.
