Small town Wisconsin sports page columnist sounds fed up
Edited on Tue Feb-03-04 04:10 PM by PeanutOne
This was on the front page of the sports section of the Oshkosh Northwestern. A sports columnist, writing a Super Bowl column, in a conservative part of Wisconsin, sounds like he's had enough. Bless you, Chuck Carlson:

...For a day, we can forget that our government is trying to conduct an indefinable war while sacrificing American lives for something no one can quite put their finger on.

We can forget that systematically and quietly our civil rights continue to erode under the guise that we’re trying to stop terrorism. Show of hands please — anybody out there been the subject of terrorism lately?

Every day we lose more forests and every day another species of animal goes extinct. Every day we pump more junk into the atmosphere, every day more kids go to bed hungry and every day the rich get richer and everyone else doesn’t.

1. bwahaha
that rocks my face.
I myself was a sports writer for a small town newspaper back in the day.

Chuck Carlson, I owe you a drink or two. And yes, Greenbay IS the best.

3. Welcome to DU disgruntled_goat, and I wish all Pro teams were owned
by their fans similar to the way the Packers are.

2. Here's my letter to Mr. Carlson...
"Hey Chuck...

I just read your column criticizing the Super Bowl, and Bush's stupid oil-crusade, er, I mean, 'war on terrorism', courtesy a link posted on www.democraticunderground.com .

I'm sure you're going to get lots of cut-and-pasted hatemail from the morons who can't or won't think for themselves, so I wanted to take a moment and thank you for speaking the truth, both about the Super Bowl, and about the Great Lie that's being fed to the American People.

Too bad your colleagues in CNN, FOX, etc are too chickenshit to report news anymore. I'm glad you still feel this is more important than your personal popularity.

Hang in there, you true patriot!

Signed,
(me)"

4. And to think he wrote this before seeing the game and its'
accompanying spectacle of bad taste and crass commercialism. I don't usually watch football, but the game was great. But the half time show was an exhibition of the lowest levels of American culture. Now just who was the target audience for all that? I know that younger folks closer to college age may not see much problem with all that. But, guys, it was really gross. The titty flashing was just the least of it. And the commercials weren't that funny, either. Except for maybe the one with the little dog.

The whole circus just reeked of devolution. That stuff can be OK on the edges as a place for experimentation, but when it goes mainstream, that's not so good. I personally am not interested in P.Diddy's genital insecurity. And Kid Rock's choice of attire was insulting. Wearing the flag(or a close semblance of it) is not a sign of patriotism. And he is for the war.

Hooray for Chuck Carlson.
