Palin and Her Pastors (Harpers)
By Ken Silverstein and Sebastian Jones

... Mike Rose, senior pastor at Juneau Christian Center

From a April 27, 2008 sermon: “If you really want to know where you came from and happen to believe the word of God that you are not a descendant of a chimpanzee, this is what the word of God says ... " ...

From a July 28, 2007 sermon: “Do you believe we’re in the last days? After listening to Newt Gingrich and the Prime Minister of Israel and a number of others at our gathering, I became convinced and I have been convinced for some time. We are living in the last days. These are incredible times to live in.” ...

Christian conservatives like Gary Bauer, Tony Perkins and James Dobson have hailed McCain’s selection of Palin. Dobson, the head of Focus on the Family, vowed earlier this year to never support McCain. However, within hours of Palin’s addition to the GOP ticket, he had changed his tune, saying, he had “not been so excited about a political candidate since Ronald Reagan.” Given the viewpoints expressed by Palin’s pastors, it’s easy to understand why Christian conservatives are so excited ...

6. Hey hey, if she wants to die...
Then do so and leave the rest of us out of it. Screw the "afterlife", I like this one just fine. I know it's not always roses, but at least it's never fire and brimstone.

3. “The purpose for the United States is to glorify God."
I could go on a rant but I'll just say this sort of thinking is dangerous to the very idea of our country.

7. They use this Rapture
bullshit to justify borrowing billions to continue unnecessary foreign wars. And in McCain's own words "Make no mistake, friends, there will be more wars." They prey on the ignorance of these sheep to fleece (no pun intended) the American people and fill the pockets of corporate friends.

9. Back in the day..
around the time of the first WTO protests ('97 or '98, IIRC) there was a workshop at one of the UU churches here, about globalization and also the religious right.

At one point, we broke into small groups. I don't remember the exact context, but I said something about the RR being dangerous. A woman in the group said, "Let's not demonize them."

Oh, of course! Wouldn't want to do that. And look where we are today. Back then, those, including myself, who were paying attention knew what was coming down.

I've said over and over...being tolerant doesn't mean colluding in your own destruction.
