Debating the presidential debate (Detroit Free Press)
.. John McCain .., who last week said that the "fundamentals of the economy are strong” while the stock market tumbled and news broke of a $700 billion bailout for Wall Street, had an epiphany today.

McCain suddenly realized what the rest of America has known for quite some time: the economy is in deep trouble. So McCain has said he wants to postpone this Friday's presidential debate and put his presidential campaign on hold while he rushes to Washington and joins President Bush’s efforts to bail out Wall Street ...

The amount of money the president is talking about is staggering. Any bailout plan should be thoroughly debated; whether to spend $700 billion on anything requires thoughtful discussion, not haste ...

The public would be better served if the debate were to proceed as planned, with the focus changed from foreign policy to the economy. Whoever is elected in November will inherit this mess, we ought to know where they stand.
