2. It is a class thing
Bow ties got their start among the aristocratic and upper class French in the mid 1700s; it is from here by way of French aristocratic settlers in the southern stretch of the Mississippi that it became the trademark of the "Southern gentleman." It also spread to academia, as only the upper class could afford the college education and extra training needed to become a university professor. You will note that the bow tie, not the longer necktie, is associated with very formal menswear.

9. When I went to my high school prom...
I couldn't stomach the thought of wearing a clip-on. I especially liked the idea that as the evening wore on, I could tug one of the ends of the tie and have it hanging down, just like Dean Martin. Can't do that with a clip-on.

I went to the tuxedo store two weeks before, and got a lesson from their salesman, and I practiced tying the bow tie every day. By prom time, I could tie it without the mirror.

Bow ties are a commitment.:patriot:

6. They recently cut Doonsbury from the Milwaukee newspaper
