Gridiron Club's Annual Dinner Roasts Politicians In Both Parties

WASHINGTON -- Washington has accumulated many traditions, and one-- dating back nearly 120 years-- is the Gridiron Club's annual dinner that roasts politicians in both parties.
The government dignitaries are usually prepared to roll with the punches and punch back at reporters when its their turn at bat.

Cheney, hardly known as a barrel of laughs or for friendliness toward the press, told the audience that after watching the club's musical skits, "I felt a tightness in my chest. I started gasping for air and breathing irregularly. Then I realized it's called laughing."

Replying in jest with perhaps an element of truth, Cheney said: "I would say that I am a dark, insidious force pushing Bush toward war and confrontation."
