The UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, said yesterday that the outgoing Spanish prime minister, José María Aznar, whose party was defeated in Sunday's general election, had paid for backing the Iraq war and for blaming last week's attacks on the armed Basque separatist group Eta.

1. Aznar is another leader

who ignored the will of the people who put him in office. He deserved to be kicked out. That's what should happen to arrogant people who, once they're in office, behave like dictators. As if they're never wrong.

2. I dashed off a LTTE

in response to a Chicago Tribune editorial that tried to characterize Spain's election and the statements of the Socialist leader as giving in to terrorism:

The Tribune editorial (Testing Spain’s resolve, March 17) gets things backwards. Rather than “Spain acceding to the terrorists’ wishes,” Prime Minister Aznar’s party was defeated because he failed to accede to the wishes of his people, 90% of whom opposed the war in Iraq. The editorial asserts that Spain is “sadly mistaken” if it believes it can shield itself from terrorism by denouncing the U.S. and Britain, but even more mistaken is the notion that the invasion and occupation of Iraq is preventing terrorism. On the contrary, it has spawned numerous terrorist attacks. The Spanish people are wise to reject this counterproductive war and the party that backed it. The worst notion of all is that a disastrous policy must be continued when it provokes a terrorist response. This lets the terrorists govern our actions in matters more important than the election in Spain.
