A noxious tide of toilet paper, raw sewage and chemical waste has transformed Dubai’s most prestigious stretch of shoreline into a foul-smelling health hazard.

A stretch of the exclusive Jumeirah Beach — a magnet for Western tourists and home to a string of hotels — has been closed. “It’s a cesspool. Our tests show too many E. coli to count. It’s like swimming in a toilet,” said Keith Mutch, the manager of the Offshore Sailing Club, which has posted warnings and been forced to cancel regattas.The pollution is a blow to Dubai’s reputation as an international holiday destination offering almost guaranteed sunshine and clear seas.

The debate over who is to blame is also turning toxic, pitting the city’s wealthy expatriates against local authorities, who have been criticised for failing to stop lorry drivers dumping human and industrial waste into the ocean.

The row also illustrates how Dubai’s rapid development threatens to outpace the Emirates’ ability to enforce environmental standards, angering the foreigners that the boom town seeks to attract. Mr Mutch first detected trouble during a walk on the beach last summer. “The stench was unbearable and the water was a muddy brown. There was toilet paper in the sand,” he recalled.

And who would want to go there? Of course, I picture the whole ghastly thing as being under some sort of biodome, but it shocks me that anyone even wants to go there for a vacation.

the water temperature is usually around 90-95 degrees. NOT refreshing, and with little wave or current activity along that shoreline, that sewage water will just sit there without moving out fast.

Good grief. I am ..... well, not surprised. Really. I've seen this kind of thing happen in other locales over that way.

You can't use "desert style" sewage management tactics, even the ones they use in older dwellings in large cities (which is basically the old cesspool directly under the house, counting on the dry air to make the shit disappear, as it were) in these resort areas--it NEVER works. It is inefficient during wet weather, and next to an oceanfront or river, you're begging for trouble.

They're using ATTILA THE HUN technology to deal with their shit, and it just doesn't match up with the fancy schmancy high rises with gleaming elevators and the latest gadgetry.

That jazzy Japanese toilet that wipes your ass for you and does a urinalysis and weighs you, and maybe tells you a bedtime story, too, isn't going to be of much use if your feces end up at the shoreline in front of your beachfront manor!
