I'm stunned that Thomas L. Friedman (column, March 25) considers the Spanish people's objection to being misled about the recent bombings in Madrid just "fine print." What kind of democratic ideals does he think we should fight for, if not what he disparagingly refers to as "truth in government"?
As a 15-year resident of Spain, I can assure him that there was very little "twitch of appeasement in the air" here after the attacks. People were and are outraged at the terrorists responsible for them.
If Mr. Friedman wants a remedy to Al Qaeda's attempts to "hijack" Western elections, he should ask President Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain to stop manipulating people, to admit that the war in Iraq was not initially crucial to the war on terror (although it may have become so), to focus on the key issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to start listening to their allies (most of whom want to help).
