President Obama spoke before the Holocaust Days of Remembrance Ceremony, April 24, 2009 (See speech below).
The U.S. Congress established the Days of Remembrance as our nation's annual commemoration of the Holocaust and created the U.S. Holocaust memorial Museum as a permenent living memorial to the victims.
This year Raphael Lemkin, the Polish-Jewish lawyer who coined the word "genocide" was honored. Lemkin took on the cause of working towards preventing genocide and partly due to his efforts, the United Nations approved the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in 1948.

The past is past and it is human nature to look forward but we cannot allow ourselves the luxury of forgetting the past lest we doom ourselves to repeat it.
