Next Up for Gay Marriage, Pennsylvania? |
|
Could it be that Pennsylvania will follow the Northeast and Iowa and legalize gay marriage? Well, PA still has that Alabama problem, but there are stirrings in support of same sex liberty and marriage equality here. http://allspinzone.com/wp/2009/06/04/next-up-for-gay-marriage-pennsylvania/

1. I hope so, I really hope so. |

Yes we have the Alabama problem, and some of our Republican legislators are bat-shit crazy, but it's time for this to happen.

2. It'll never happen here unless it comes from the feds. There are too many Alabamans |

between Philly & Pittsburgh and too many Catholics in the cities for normal Pennslyvanians to bring about marriage equality. I'd be willing to bet the the bigotry bill proposed by the puke legislator does pass. And don't count on Fast Eddie to veto, either.

3. Three consecutive bigotry bills |

have failed. Seems Repubs are afraid to be seen as bigoted. Someone should check to see if they are RINOs or something.

There's just too much opposition within State Government. I have friends who have worked on it. They're not giving up, but they don't seem to think it's on the horizon. When you combine the republicans in the state legislature, with the high numbers of more socially conservative and catholic democrats you aren't looking at a good combination.
Even the more liberal urban ones tend to have strong catholic union bases they don't want to alienate and then lose to another democrat the next primary. I've seen that happen too.
It's not that all the democrats are conservative either, or even the majority. I'd say the majority are NOT socially conservative....but the conservative ones vote more consistently, and vote in blocks. They won't lose a primary race by not supporting a gay marriage bill, but they might lose one if they do.
I think we'll see a gay marriage law first in Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, and even Maryland and Delaware before we see one in Pennsylvania. PA won't have one until we're on the slope towards it passing in every state.

5. It is still encouraging |

to see the Repubs here can't get an amendment off the ground, and that champions of liberty are trying to get freedom in this state.
