3. We won't know if he still backs it -- unequivocally -- until his speech. |
|
And then we will know very much indeed about this administration.

5. Yes, things are getting down to the bottom line |
|
like Jane Hamsher says, we gave them the House, the Senate , the White House, and they are using a Republican (Snowe) to write the health care "reform" bill. Truly amazing.

11. Here's the "substance" of the story: |
|
Low-level White House officials have reached out to certain reform groups that have staked their ground on the need for a public option, I'm told, and warned them not to spend any more money advocating for the policy--that it's just not worth it. That suggestion hasn't been heeded--at least for now.

18. You gonna come back and eat your words when he drops the public option? |
|
It won't pass the senate. Obama knows this. Why would he keep it? If he was going to keep it, he'd come out and say so - guess we'll find out for sure on wednesday, but it highly looks like he's gonna drop it from what i've read. the house backs the public option, the senate does not.

20. If Obama drops the public option, some of us just may drop him. |
|
The public option will clear the house. Obama and Reid should be working on the Blue Dog Democrats. If Democrats lose on the public option, the Blue Dogs will be the first to be laughed out of their seats by grinning Republicans.
Obama needs to make that clear. I just haven't seen Obama make the effort that is necessary to get good health care reform. Without a public option there will be no price reduction. If Obama thinks otherwise, he is simply a fool. Sorry to say that, but he is.

He'll lose me for sure. If he can't get the Dem's in line for AT LEAST a public OPTION - then we should move on to someone who can. I've been quite disappointed about how he has handled this whole thing. Wait until after the special election to fill Kennedy's seat if you have to - but do NOT pass a bill with no public option. Usually incumbent presidents don't face opposition from within their own party when they run for a second term - but if he fails to get a public OPTION - it's just a freaking OPTION - then I would surely expect someone (Howard Dean maybe?) to challenge him for 2012.

Has the WH considered the fact that they treat liberals and progressives like unwanted step-children UNTIL right before the elections? Do they believe that we are devoid of a long term memory?
ENOUGH!

30. I wouldn't go that far |

I think he's determined to be compromising and centrist to a fault. That and he's failing at basic negotiation by starting from a centrist position.
He should have been able to start with a more progressive starting point, whether Medicare for all, true single payer, or something similar. Supposedly, he learned the lesson after not receiving any (R) votes for the stimulus package, after starting in a centrist position. Sure as hell doesn't look like it.
He's governing like the opposition party includes adults and that we only have slim majorities. The first is not true, the second may be, when you consider that several Blue Dogs are DINOs.
Overall, I still trust Dean on this issue. If he says we got the best we could, I'm willing to listen to him. I don't think he'll say that though, if there isn't a decent public option.
