No Indian university among world's best 100, Harvard tops the list
PTI 8 October 2009, 10:37pm IST

LONDON: None of the Indian universities figure among the top 100 varsities of the world, with America and UK dominating the scene, says a report
published on Thursday.

America's Harvard University has retained its top position in 2009 while UK's Cambridge University has moved up from third to second position. Yale University of US has slipped one position to third.

According to the QS/Times Higher Education rankings, the University College London (UCL) leapfrogged Oxford University as the latter slipped from fourth to joint fifth position along with Imperial College, London.

Overall, the UK still punches above its weight, second only to the US, the report said. It has four out of the top 10 slots and 18 in the top 100.

The number of Asian universities in the list of top 100 has increased from 14 to 16. The University of Tokyo, at 22, is the highest ranked Asian university, ahead of the University of Hong Kong that stands at 24.

Leading UK universities said institutions in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong were "snapping at the heels" of western institutions, arguing they need more funding to compete on the global stage.

However, there has been a significant fall in the number of North American universities in the top 100, from 42 in 2008 to 36 this year.

The rankings are based on an international survey of 9,000 academics who assessed the institutions' research facility, teaching quality and ability to recruit staff and students abroad.

"The broad message of these tables is clear - the leading UK research universities are held in high esteem internationally but countries like China and Korea, which are investing massively in their best institutions, are snapping at our heels" Wendy Piatt, director general of the Russell Group of universities said.

Piatt said the UK was less well-funded than its competitors and if public spending cuts hit budgets they would be under increasing pressure.

Universities are currently arguing for improved funding in a forthcoming review of the student finance system, to be launched by the government within weeks. They are calling for fees to be increased to safeguard the quality of teaching.

The top 10 Universities are: Harvard (US), Cambridge (UK), Yale(US), UCL, London (UK), Imperial College, London and Oxford (both UK, joint 5), Chicago (US), Princeton (US), MIT, Massachusetts (US) and California Institute of Technology (US).

Are you bitter about losing a job to outsourcing? If so, you should blame the American company that wanted cheaper labor.

18. "anti-India stuff?"
From an Indian news source?

A blue collar worker can complain about their work being shipped to China, but white collar workers can't complain about theirs being shipped to India? You are kidding me, right?

Get over yourself. I do blame the U.S. corporations, yes I do, indeed.

25. And blame the politicians who bail out the companies who then beg for "bailouts",
as if the "government subsidy" they all get to begin with isn't enough...

I don't know what the point of my response is, except you're right in that the American company, being as cheap as possible, is the root cause.

And, more important, a LOT of people are under the impression that India is the only country, if not the most-used country, for the offshoring of IT jobs. Of course people will look squarely in that direction. If the target country was Bolivia, people would be looking down there. Thank the MEDIA for reporting solely on India, for that's where people get their information from. The MEDIA.

India "is" the "most used country for the offshoring of IT jobs."

India Remains World's Top Outsourcing Destination

Despite a backlash against outsourcing, India's low costs, skilled workforce and business environment make it No. 1, says AT Kearney

Can't fault the media here, as it is TRUE.

They are the most-used destination, regardless of other possible destination, so it also makes sense the media would report on India the most often. (In short, it works both ways, and if stereotypes are created for reasons, the media reporting on a typical set of circumstances is true for the same reasons. India is the most used destination, even if some who are pro-offshoring say it's not all about India. It by and large still is...)

Skilled workforce? They can thank the Americans who trained them before being fired due to their "high cost"...

21. Curious...
I looked online to see exactly how old UNAM is. Their webpage doesn't give a date that is anywhere near the oldest university. They claim September 22, 1910 is the date of their founding: http://www.unam.mx/EN/aboutunam/unam_tiempo/unam/1910.html .

Even Miskatonic University is older than that:

"Miskatonic University was the third college in New England and the seventh in America -- and the only one that welcomed students of all religious persuasions. A commitment to diversity and intellectual freedom remains a hallmark of the University today. Established as Miskatonic University in the town of Arkham, Masschusetts, the University moved to its present location on Arkham's College Hill in 1770."

5. My daughter graduated from Harvard this past June......
and she never set foot in the Harvard Business School that I know of in the 4 years that she was there....so I think the ranking has little to do with the graduate schools, and appears to be in relations to the undergraduate school.

She's attending #28 on the top 100's list currently for secondary graduate studies.....
but it is #3 in leading Medical Schools.

4. We agree on a lot of offshoring issues, certainly, but with this article I am confused.
All knowledge should be beneficial.

The real problem is, corporations only value the cheapest "commodities", either mineral or organic, without even an ounce of care about quality or anything else. Except quick profit for themselves. That's how things have devolved over the last 30~some years.

It'd be nice if every country had an esteemed university.

It'd be nice if world governments and societies really cared about people more than profits.

I know, I'm dreaming...

Our company does hire IIT people and they seem competent. I bear no ill-will to them. They are trying to support their family like anyone else. They do get paid $125-$150K or so - no doubt a lot goes back home.
