From the beginning, it must have occurred to the folks who invited Pennsylvania's influential junior senator to campus that Cheyney University and Rick Santorum are an odd pairing, despite his past advocacy for funding historically black colleges. To quote that great social critic Simon Cowell from another context: "Historically, black colleges and Rick Santorum go together like chocolate ice cream and onions."

But instead of Oprah, you get Rick Santorum, a very condescending white man that nobody you know ever voted for. He tells you that too many black children are born out of wedlock and that it's your fault.
Even though you're wearing a cap and gown and you're about to be awarded degrees in economics, history and education, he insists that you marry your nonexistent "baby's momma" and vote Republican to avert civilization's slide into barbarism.
Finally, he mentions black people you should slavishly imitate. You boo at the top of your lungs not because you dislike Condoleezza Rice per se, but because you never expected to be "playa hated" at your own graduation.
Perhaps the class of 2004 should've gone with Clarence Thomas after all.
