Deepwater Horizon Gets A Whole Lot Worse

Based on an EnviroKnow chart.

BP's Deepwater Horizon disaster took a major turn toward one of the many worst-case scenarios today. BP took off the containment cap that had been capturing up to 25,000 barrels of the oil a day, after a robotic submarine smashed into one of its vents.

The Deepwater Horizon spill cam showed an immediate surge in oil. How much oil? That's up for debate. The highest government estimate so far has 60,000 barrels as the upper daily limit.

But an internal BP memo posted by Pro Publica showed the company said the spill could be as large as 100,000 barrels a day if every containment measure failed.

"If BOP and wellhead are removed and if we have incorrectly modeled the restrictions -- the rate rate could be as high as ~ 100,000 barrels per day up the case or 55,000 barrels per day up the annulus (low probability worse cases)," the undated memo reads.

1. Good thing for BP the only news will be about McChystal today.
Funny how these things work out, huh?

2. Not to mention the two people who died in the clean up
but there probably wont be much press about it.

4. BP Oil Spill Disaster: Two Killed in Accidents; Containment Cap Removed After Robot Sub Collision
Oil from the BP oil spill disaster is spewing again into the Gulf of Mexico at nearly full force after a venting system connected the so-called containment cap over the blown-out wellhead was damaged in an accident with a robot sub, said Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the commander in charge of the government's effort to control the 65-day-old spill.
COO Doug Suttles is dispatched to Florida's Pensacola Beach to oversee cleanup.

Separately, Allen said two cleanup workers have died in unrelated accidents in the Gulf, the first deaths reported since 11 people died in when Deepwater Horizon drilling rig burned and began the crisis in April.

Allen said the small sub bumped into the venting system connected to the containment cap. That sent gas rising through the plumbing that sends warm water down to the cap to prevent solid crystals -- known as hydrates -- from forming in the cap.

5. You forgot a link.

Allen had limited information on the two deaths. Early word was that they did not appear to be work-related, but both were being investigated.

"One was an accident regarding a swimming pool, a swimming event, and the other one was a vessel of opportunity operator in Gulf Shores, Miss.," he said. "Vessel of opportunity" is shorthand for a ship or boat pressed into service in the cleanup effort.

8. Charter boat captain shot himself on his boat.
FORT MORGAN, Ala. -- An Orange Beach, Ala., charter boat captain shot and killed himself this morning just before his vessel was scheduled to set out to take part in oil cleanup and protection efforts, investigators said.

William Allen "Rookie" Kruse, 55, was found dead on the flying bridge of his boat, The Rookie, at the dock at Fort Morgan Marina just before 7 a.m., Baldwin County Deputy Coroner Rod Steade said.

"He had just let his deckhands off the boat and sent them to get something," Steade said. "He was going to meet them at the fuel dock. They heard a pop and when the boat didn't come around, they went back and found him."

Baldwin County Coroner Stan Vinson said witnesses told investigators that Kruse had been upset about the loss of business caused by the closing of fishing grounds and public perceptions of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

9. How sad. Just like the factory workers in China and farmers in India.
We can probably expect more Gulf suicides, if exploding methane doesn't kill everyone first.

The friggin' puppetmasters live for tragedy, I think.
