http://dailytribune.com/articles/2010/07/14/news/doc4c3cfceae2c8f702037868.txtWith thousands of Americans running out of employment benefits on a daily basis, U.S. Rep. Sander Levin is calling on Republicans to drop their partisan stance against extending the program or risk a rise in poverty and a double-dip recession.
“People have always said that partisan politics ends at the water’s edge on foreign policy. I think the same should be true for the economy. This is too important,” said Levin, R-Royal Oak.
Levin said Republican senators should abandon their attempt to block the House Democrats’ legislation that will extend unemployment insurance. GOP opposition has already resulted in the elimination of a major portion of the bill which would continue numerous tax breaks for businesses and individuals through the end of the year.
“The risk of doing nothing is severe,” Levin said in an interview with the Daily Tribune. “Lack of an unemployment extension is one reason. The possibility of a second recession is another reason. Uncertainty in the tax code is a third reason.”
The suggestion that extending unemployment is a fiscal issue or a welfare issue is “just wrong, in terms of need and in terms of precedent,” Levin said.
