Robert Reich - We need more stimulus

In the short-term we need to have more money in the pockets of the middle class. This means tax cuts and more stimulus spending. In the slightly long-term, we've got to exempt the first $20,000 of income from the payroll tax and make it up by applying the payroll tax to incomes over $250,000. We need to make it easier for middle class families to afford college for their kids. And the nation needs to invest to a greater extent in our crumbling infrastructure, in early childhood education and all sorts of things that we need. When we do all of this we will create more jobs and a prosperous economy and also, a widely-shared prosperity. ~~

We do need more stimulus. We need more spending on infrastructure, that generates jobs. If there's no other way of getting people employed in the short-term, lets have another version of the WPA (Works Projects Administration), the Depression Era program, in which the government hired people to maintain our parks and improve our systems of transportation.

There are many things that need doing, so why not hire the unemployed to do them?

6. I urge all DUers to comment on articles on media sites. Use links you became aware of here on DU.

I wish more people would post comments on media sites (especially tv "news" show sites) so they can see some comments from people who actually think before they post. From people who are not just repeating something they read on a sign, or regurgitating something they heard Limbaugh or Beck say.

You will be making a difference. I believe that. (it's better than leaving the screens to the idiots)

I've been doing this. I know it's like busting rocks, setting up an ID, PW, & then responding to the email confirming you are who you said you are. And you're thinking: "But how many people are going to see this?" .. Well, the people responsible for the site will see it .. and if it's NBC, CBS, ABC or PBS you might have an impact on the way they are reporting on events. Right now they think 80% of the people that watch are idiots!

BTW if you can't post active links, you can put in the URL and tell people to paste the URL in their browser's navigation bar, at the top of the screen. OR you can indicate key-words to use and tell them to Google with them.

We need to get FACTS and conclusions from legitimate studies and analyses out there.

in this case, the CBO showed the ARRA worked, Moodie's Analytics, concluded the ARRA worked. But, yes, not enough. Why? just as many said in the beginning - it wasn't big enough. In Obama's defense, he knew a delayed stimulus would be NO stimulus. He couldn't let the Repubs delay it with a long fight. So he bought them off with tax cuts - unfortunately it was one third of the stimulus.. The Repubs had begun their campaign to downsize the stimulus to keep it from being effective. And the media act like the Republicans were not a factor in this. It's all due to Obama's policy. Well, if Obama had not had the Republicans to deal with, he would have proposed a bigger stimulus. But he couldn't afford to have the Repubs delay it.
