Levin ready to drop DADT from Defense Authorization Bill

Top Democrat ready to kill effort to ban ‘don’t ask don’t tell’

"Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan and John McCain of Arizona, the top Democrat and Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, are in talks on stripping the proposed repeal and other controversial provisions from a broader defense bill, leaving the repeal with no legislative vehicle to carry it," wrote The Wall Street Journal's Laura Meckler.

<---snip--->

"Levin is making calls under the premise – we can’t afford to waste time on a controversial provision, so we’ll strip out the controversial provision and be able to get the bill on and off the floor in the available amount of time," the anonymous source said.

<---snip--->

President Barack Obama was applauded by gay rights activists for promising to work with Congress to repeal "don't ask, don't tell" in his 2009 State of the Union address.

In a talk with progressive bloggers before the midterm elections, Obama said there was a plan to repeal the ban in the lame duck session. "I’m not going to tip my hand now. But there is a strategy," he said.

Maybe they should all get together and talk amongst themselves once in awhile. It seems as though there is a major disconnect happening.

1. Of course they will.
When you have no principles to fight for - why bother? It's just an annoyance - a barrier to "getting things done."

4. That's just goofy. The election is over, and any political damage is already done.
The Republicans will be shutting down the government soon or holding it hostage.

Why waste an opportunity to put a hold on defense spending until a perfectly timely social objective is conceded to?

5. Well...sorry, gay servicemembers
But looks like you'll have to keep living in shame since our elected representatives don't have the testicular fortitude to defend you.

But hey, look! Shiny pennies for you!

9. Where'd I put my "Democrats Cave" headline stamp?
I thought I wouldn't need it after we won both houses and the presidency. Silly me. I'm starting to be convinced I'd need the it if we had a one party political system composed solely of the Democratic Party.

Sorry, gays & lesbians -- looks like you'll have to wait another decade or so for DADT to be repealed. I can't imagine what it feels like to be let down time and again by our politicians; I just know it's a stupid and unfair law. I was in the military (Air Force) and didn't give a shit about another crew member's sex or sexual orientation -- just their ability to accomplish the mission competently.

12. Hmm. And wasn't it just posted that the WH would NOT support
stripping the repeal of DADT from the Defense Bill? But I forget, this IS the same WH that declared itself in favor of repealing DADT in the State of the Union but lobbied privately to out on hold ? And the same WH that promised NOT to sign a HCR without a Public Option? Gee, somehow I don't seem to get that this is all Levin's idea.
