David Frum wants taxpayers to bankroll "The Ronald Reagan Museum of the Victims of Communism"

"What could be more fitting?"

The right way to honor Ronald Reagan

Washington (CNN) -- We're approaching the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Ronald Reagan: February 6, 2011. It's time to begin thinking seriously about an appropriate national commemoration of this good man and great president.

Let me suggest something: A museum in Washington dedicated to the victims of communism.

A "Ronald Reagan Museum of the Victims of Communism" in Washington would ensure that these stories were kept alive and made vivid for future generations.

What could be more fitting than to remember those crimes in the city that we called the capital of the free world during the struggle against communism? And in the name of the president who not only spoke so eloquently against those crimes, but who issued the challenge that presaged communism's downfall?

So there's my proposal for the new Congress. Introduce a bill to authorize the development of the museum on February 6, with a view to completing work in time for Reagan's 110th birthday in 2021. Instead of a statue, remember this president who so valued the individual with a monument that will restore the individuality of wronged, imprisoned and murdered millions.

1. No, but I would support bankrolling Ronald Reagan Memorial Toilet
to be placed atop of his grave.

3. That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time.
The unintentional humor of Republics is often sublime.

Does Frum always look constipated?

4. How about a monument to the 99% of us who are victims of Reagan?
That would be refreshing.

Oh, I forgot, ketchup really is a vegetable.

14. I've always said Reagan is the political equivalent of Weekend at Bernie's.
Prop up a brain-dead president and drag him all over the place and a bunch of people will think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Frum is actually implying that Reagan, and Reagan alone, is responsible for the fall of communism. That had more to do with people on the other side of the Iron Curtain, like Gorbachev, Walesa and Pope John Paul. Reagan just happened to be president when signs of the Soviet Union's demise became visible to the West. Is Frum contending that 40-some years of arms races, peace talks and the fact that the Soviet Union was built for failure did nothing? But when Ronnie Ray-gun went to Berlin to tell Gorbachev to tear down the wall, that's all it took?

8. How about a Ronald Reagan Museum of the Victims of ARENA? a Ronald Reagan Museum of the Victims of
Battalion 316? a Ronald Reagan Museum of the Victims of the FDN? a Ronald Reagan Museum of the Victims of the Broederbond?

That doesn't begin to exhaust the limits of museums we could have to remember the victims of thugs Reagan supported

9. They just really don't get it, do they?
That's a lot like the new Teabagger Congressman who got pissed because his government healthcare didn't start soon enough for him.

Do these guys know that there is this word out there?: IRONY

And it has nothing to do with starchy clothes!

12. There's already a national airport named after Reagan.
Plus, there are highways, government buildings and god knows what else named after the guy.

Republicans are so desperate to hang their hat on SOMEBODY because for the past 100 years, they have fielded some of the biggest failures for presidents in our nation's history. So, they make Reagan some kind of icon for conservatism even though his life and actions are almost 180 degrees from what conservatism stands for. Under Reagan:

Record budget deficits
Doubling the national debt
30,000 federal jobs added during his presidency
Uncorking the military industrial complex genie out of the bottle
Tax policies that are polarizing this country into a nation of haves and have nots.

13. Exactly
And this is why I'm puzzled about President Obama's admiration of Reagan. Anyone that admires Reagan is simply deluded.

15. Will it include a pile of Salvadoran Baby Skulls?
Referencing Robert Parry's Consortiumnews op-ed: Reagan and the Salvadoran Baby Skulls:

Ronald Reagan’s many admirers may find this idea offensive, but – given a new report by the Washington Post – it might be fitting to have a display at Reagan National Airport to show how Salvadoran baby skulls were used as candle holders and good luck charms. Perhaps the presentation could contain skeletal remains of Guatemalans and Nicaraguans, too.

You could build some pretty good displays of photos and artifacts showing Reagan administration victims from South and Central America.

Doesn't David Frum think all those dead doctors, nurses, teachers, peasants, and let's not forget children in El Salvador and Nicaragua need a memorial as well?
