Computer science enrollments rebound, up 10% last fall
April 12, 2011 06:00 AM ET

Computerworld - WASHINGTON -- For the third year computer science enrollments have increased, ending the precipitous decline in enrollments that followed the bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2000-2001.

When that speculative bubble burst, the subsequent shakeout and unemployment in the tech industry sent enrollments plummeting, raised concerns that the U.S. competitiveness would suffer in the long-run. Enrollments are arching up, but are still well below the peak reached nearly 10 years ago.

The Computer Research Association (CRA), which tracks enrollments and graduation rates for computer science students, says enrollments in computer science programs were up last fall by 10%.

The CRA's annual Taulbee Survey, now in its 40th year, tracks students that are enrolled at Ph.D.-granting institutions. Its latest findings are based on responses from 195 universities.

1. So that means
more student debt at the racetrack?

The horses, (mangy and flea-bitten with braces on their legs) are at the starting gate. Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets on your future career! We have ample, (lifetime?) loans available for your wager. It is not debt slavery and, if you pick the right horse, its an investment in your imagined future.

Wewin/Ulose 2012!

3. This is great news!
Technology has done away with so many jobs and will do more "damage" in the future. People need to start focusing on computer science and other technology. Then...they need to stop friggin' breeding.

Go nerds!!!!

:silly:

6. None of the students I advise have had any problems finding industry related work
I add that qualifier since some schools tend to cook the books by declaring a grad working at McDonalds as successfully employed.
