‘Malintent Detection’ Technology Tested In The Northeast United States
By Eric W. Dolan
Monday, May 30th, 2011 -- 6:20 pm

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has begun field testing new technology designed to identify people who intend to commit a terrorist act.

Nature reported that the DHS has been conducting tests of Future Attribute Screening Technology (FAST) in the past few months at an undisclosed location in the northeast.

The technology uses remote sensors to measure physiological properties, such as heart rate and eye movement, which can be used to infer a person's current mindset.

According to a Privacy Impact Assessment (PDF) released by the DHS in 2008, the technology is intended to measure a person's malintent -- the intent to cause harm.

2. I wonder if the people that come up with this kind of shit have any clue as to the monstrous society

that they're in the process of developing?

This would be the U.S. version of the "virginity check" but in one in sense worse as it will ultimately be used to punish/detain/hinder someone for what they might do based on their emotions as opposed to what they may have done in the past.

While the latter is cruder and more physically invasive, the former is another malignant sedative to deaden the mind and the spirit, in short the powers that be, don't want humans anymore.

Thanks for the thread, Purveyor.

6. The machine would implode . . .
like that computer on Star Trek that Capt. Kirk would talk into self-destruction. All the warning lights would start blinking a voice would start repeating, "Too evil - Release sensors now . . . Too evil - Release sensors now."

7. A small problem with this whole idea.
Unless you have live terrorists that you're testing it on, you're basing it's properties on what you THINK you'll get from the real deal. In other words, the triggers are mostly speculative.

8. I was wondering how they propose to test it.
Would some guy pretending to have evil intent be good enough to test with? How many "false positives" do they consider "acceptable"? How many lawsuits will they lose before they abandon this folly?

10. Therein lies the problem, because you CAN'T test it.
Even if you had someone who pretended to have evil intent, you would be speculating as to how accurate you could make it based on an imitation of the real thing, but no REAL evil intent.

The closest you could come to the real thing is if you had video footage or the equivalent of someone, recorded just before they actually committed an act of terrorism.

11. Seems to me that each individual would be different.
One person might be extremely anxious about a particular trip or just getting on a plane. I think they will get a lot of false positives with something like that. A real sociopath might not show the same signs of stress as a normal person.

13. This is beyond Thought Crime - we've moved on to Face Crime
I get this is Walmart stores all the time. I walk in the door and ignore the greeter. Most people stare straight ahead trudgingly blindly from aisle to aisle. I hate the store so much I just want to get in, find what I'm after (usually cat food - I've got picky eaters) and get out, so I'm on the lookout for the pet aisle. Part of my work has to do with security systems so I check out the cameras. A few minutes later and I've picked up a tail.

14. So, pretty much any straight male that looks at a beautiful woman in a bikini on the beach will set
this thing off and be hit with an "intent to commit a terrorist act" violation.

16. Don't get too close to the telescreens
if you have a fast heart rate. And especially if you have an anxiety disorder.
