L.A. unions want members to leave Kaiser

Los Angeles County unions, in a dispute over rate increases, will ask their members to leave health plans run by Kaiser Permanente, the biggest nonprofit U.S. health insurer.

The Los Angeles county labor coalition said Friday that Kaiser wants to raise premiums 13.3 percent after promising last year that increases would be held to 5 percent to 8 percent through 2005.

The unions said they negotiated a three-year contract with the county, based on smaller increases, and can't bargain for lower rates, leaving members with higher costs for health care.
