Solicitation case brings probation

07/20/2004

The former Republican chairman of the St. Louis Board of Election Officials pleaded guilty Monday in Madison County Circuit Court of indecent solicitation of a child.

Coan, 42, of St. Louis, was sentenced to two years of probation and was ordered to complete court-ordered treatment.

He was arrested March 1, 2001 at a grocery store in Alton by an undercover police officer posing as a 14-year-old girl.

Police say Coan searched the Internet in February of 2001 before getting in touch with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. The correspondence took place on what was actually a police Web site. When Coan arranged the meeting, police say, the officer was sent to Alton and the arrest was made.

In addition to being the top Republican election official, Coan is an attorney in Missouri. Authorities in Missouri will decide whether he will be allowed to keep his law license.
