Ted Turner- My Beef With Big Media

In the late 1960s, when Turner Communications was a business of billboards and radio stations and I was spending much of my energy ocean racing, a UHF-TV station came up for sale in Atlanta. It was losing $50,000 a month and its programs were viewed by fewer than 5 percent of the market.
I acquired it.

When I moved to buy a second station in Charlotte--this one worse than the first--my accountant quit in protest, and the company's board vetoed the deal. So I mortgaged my house and bought it myself. The Atlanta purchase turned into the Superstation; the Charlotte purchase--when I sold it 10 years later--gave me the capital to launch CNN.

Both purchases played a role in revolutionizing television. Both required a streak of independence and a taste for risk. And neither could happen today. In the current climate of consolidation, independent broadcasters simply don't survive for long. That's why we haven't seen a new generation of people like me or even Rupert Murdoch--independent television upstarts who challenge the big boys and force the whole industry to compete and change.

2. WE are the New Turners! Internet is the NEW TURNER....these "old guys"
Edited on Thu Jul-22-04 08:44 PM by KoKo01
don't see it.. I get ALL my news from the NET. And, I'm close to Turner's Generation.

It's amazing to me to see those over 45 year olds who can't get on a computer and find info...but have to call a "techie" in to help them. And that some of these folks don't seem to be able to realize there's a NEW MOVEMENT afoot...and I'm of their age group!

Say's to Me...It's NOT AGE...but "thinking out of the box" that will save us...and once you become part of a "Group Think" for your age group you have succumbed to a "meme" that "there's no one out there to save you" from your greed of profit and your GUILT over what you've done.

Hey BIG BOYS your days of "Control of Thought" are GONE! The smart ones have left you in the dust...and we have to hope the "creatives of the internet" will try to keep it "Forever Free!"

There are tools there that us "oldies" don't even comprehend, but we support the INDEPENDENCE OF FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ...on THE INTERNET!

Turner probably still uses his "Secretary" to "print out his e-mails" because he never learned to "do for himself" like the rest of us who were "Mergered Out, Downsized, and Layed Off" in all the years Turner and his buddies were making the big Bucks off our assess.

WE CLUELESS had to learn how to do without the Secretaries and others who would help us communicate through Computer Use. We aren't "techies" but "Necessity caused us to have to learn to do all this stuff on our own."

They don't see us...they don't know we are out here. Rummy didn't even know there were digital cameras who would record his abuse of Geneva Conventions...and crimes against humanity.

Old guys who don't learn and live "inside the box" are doomed to being outed by other "oldies" who had to LEARN in league with the newer tech savey folks who can run circles around these geezers who need the "cleaning ladies" to come in and dust up after their messes.

:puke: on them.... Although, I admire Turner for saying what he did in this article, and the applaud the others like geezer Cronkite for coming out against the Chimp...

Still...it's up to us..

On Edit: Sorry this is a venemous rant..sort of trashing folks of a certain age group...just take it as a rant.....
