Boston - A few years back, before he married Teresa Heinz, and while I was still working for his hometown newspaper, John Kerry and I would spend an occasional night out together.

On more than one occasion, he gave me a lift at the end of the evening in his aging silver Chrysler convertible, breaking speed limits and a selection of other statutes as we barreled down Constitution Avenue.

He always had a touch of risk-taker, rebel and arriviste.

long time. He is a complex man altogether. What is great about that article is it truly shoots down the "richest senator" crap. He has very little (if any) personal fortune....

I would not want to be the leader of France or China or Israel or the Palestinian Authority. The USA would be in my face, or on my phone, all the time.

The economy? Kerry knows how to deal, and you can expect that Kennedy and McCain and Kerry's pal, Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota, will carry the ball for him in the Senate. If the House remains in the hands of hyperpartisan Republicans, Kerry is likely to ape George W. Bush: getting what he can in 2005, then beating up on the do-nothing Congress in the midterm election of 2006.

Kerry will offer to trade targeted tax cuts to Republicans in Congress to get more accessible health care, and he'll make life miserable for big oil and pharmaceutical companies. He'll let you have an SUV, but demand that it burn less gasoline. And he'll offer you incentives to buy a Toyota hybrid. High-tech firms and entrepreneurs may actually come to like him: He's pushed for tax breaks for them for years.

Integrity? There are few issues that Kerry hasn't tried to straddle. It is his greatest flaw. He even prevaricated about his bout with cancer last year. But his straddling may also reflect the demands of his Massachusetts constituency: Kerry is more of a centrist than his state's left-wing whiners will tolerate.

Osama bin Laden? If Bush doesn't get him, Kerry will. He's killed for his country before.
