David Brooks continues acting terrified in "Kerry at the Wheel"
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 08:46 AM by thebigidea
I sat there listening to this drone, thinking, "If this man becomes president, I have to stop being a pundit because I know nothing about politics."

I also didn't sense that the Democratic Party is just sober enough to realize it needs a designated driver like John Kerry to get it home at night. This is a whacked-out party that has spent the past year throwing back Howard Dean hurricanes, being gripped with Michael Moore fever and indulging in Whoopi-esque animosity binges.

And yet there's that moment when you are drinking, before you get really blotto, when you realize that you have just enough sobriety for one last lifesaving act of responsibility. For the Democrats, nominating Kerry is that act - and now he's running a professional, disciplined campaign.

Typical nonsense. Kerry now embarks on "Castroite soliloquies", apparently. He tries to be snarky, but I smell fear behind these lame quips. The same kind of fear that stained his face when he had to face Jimmy Carter.

1. Brooks is perceived by repugs to be "bland" enough to spout their
hate covered by "rationality" but it is too transparent to even be worth reading. Every time I see his face (and they use him EVERYWHERE) I know the republican party is the wrong party.

WHY does he write for the NYT? When have the rightwing media thought it necessary to have a liberal "pundit" in their midst?

2. And a neocon acolyte of William Kristol, at that.
I wonder if the Weekly Standard would like to hire Molly Ivins?

Its weird how much the republicans embrace fear. Guess it has to do with the have's and have more's. Spose' some are worried that their gains will be taken away.

This guy's fear is so transparent its laughable. Imagine if these were the types who ventured on the Mayflower. We wouldn't be here.

The Democrats are "just sober enough". Well gee, thanks. I think the republicans are just fearful enough to realize they may have to share this country and that we're not all here to "serve" them. Some of us are pretty smart too.

A commentator who looks like he is in the twin towers on 9/11 whenever he talks about the Democrats or the speeches from last night is hardly credible.

Personally.... I loved it.

They actually discussed ridiculous fantasies like "changing the face of the Middle East" and people took them seriously.

The PNAC Salad Days!

Why, I haven't seen or heard from Richard Perle in weeks. Sob.

5. Bush is an alcoholic so Brooks talks about the Dems needing ...

... a "designated driver."

6. When I read that editorial earlier, I sent this email to him:
Mr. Brooks: Are insults and your own brand of bitter anger all you can contribute to the debate about who should lead this nation? I suggest that you spend some time researching the effect of subjectivity and incivility on the decline of journalism. Do you remember journalism?

I hope he reads it.

7. Ah, good idea.

I just summed up my whining on this thread and added:

Good luck with that sinking ship, Brooks. Your boy is
going down... and judging by the look on your face
lately, you know it.

love and kisses,
me

Oooo, he just sent a reply. But didn't actually include anything in the email. So I taunted him further:

Oh, c'mon. You can do better than a blank response,
surely.

Summon up all your wit in service of
neoconservatism... can't you work in a reference to
"elites" or something? Because a guy that writes for
the NYTimes and appears on the teevee just radiates
"common man."

12. I watched it all last night on public tv and I think
that David is just disappointed that the Democrats aren't acting all wild eyed with hate for Bush like they expected. Instead everyone is restrained and talking about what Kerry/Edwards can do instead of talking about Bush so much. Although I did think that President Carter gave Bush a pretty good going over. David is let down that the Dems aren't acting child like.
