Johah Goldberg (USA Today): Democratic unity: Bush-hating
As all DUers know by now, USA Today jettisoned Ann Coulter after she wrote a hateful shrill piece of nonsense about the DNC in Boston. McPaper replaced her with Jonah Goldberg, who once had the good sense and pleasure to fire Ms. Coulter at the National Review.

Here, Mr. Goldberg accuses the Democrats of what Ms. Coulter is guilty.

Democratic unity: Bush-hating
By Jonah Goldberg

this promises to be the most disciplined Democratic convention ever — which normally would be akin to saying you've found the world's tallest midget. But this year they do have their act together — but not because they all agree on the issues nor because they all love John Kerry. Everyone from the patchouli-soaked activists with open-toed shoes and closed minds to the button-down blue dogs are holding hands and singing kumbaya for one reason: They hate George W. Bush.
Not only is this is an odd motivation for a party that demands that "hatred" be literally outlawed (though hate crimes aimed at Republicans aren't really hate crimes — that's merely "speaking truth to power" or some such). Such unity is particularly shocking because nobody likes Kerry. Delegates still talk about Bill Clinton like he's family; they talk about Kerry like he's the professor of a class they never took.
It is difficult to find a Democrat or a liberal journalist who truly likes Kerry — and some of these people adored such human toothaches as Al Gore and Michael Dukakis. This is the unspoken secret of this convention and campaign. For more than a year, New Hampshire voters — who knew Kerry well — rejected him entirely.

Mr. Goldberg is an improvement over Ms. Coulter, but that is a little like saying that the US imposed regime in Baghdad is an improvement over Saddam Hussein. If one is looking for an insightful conservative critique of the Convention, one will have to look beyond this piece.

Mr. Goldberg is capable of better. Perhaps he scrambled to put something together when told that Ms. Coulter's assignment now belong to him, and this is it. Hopefully, he will supply better before the week is out.

1. Wow! No insight. No analysis. Merely ridicule:
"most disciplined Democratic convention ever .. akin to saying .. world's tallest midget"

"patchouli-soaked activists with open-toed shoes and closed minds"

"human toothaches as Al Gore and Michael Dukakis"

"Dean's head exploded"

"Dean .. popping the veins in his neck as if .. about to turn into the Hulk"

"smiley masks"

all used to promote the author's vacuous message, which is that democrats are the party of hate, a message delivered with a lack of visible irony that it seems appropriate to question Mr. Goldberg's mental stability.

3. Typical Republican dim bulb
Born on third base, thought he hit a fuckin' triple. Got nothing in his toolbox but ad hominem attacks. You think that if his name was Jonah Goldfarb or Jonah Silverberg, and his mum wasn't named Luciferanne, that have a gig? Dude would be selling vacuum cleaners door to door.

Lesson to Dems: even when you don't bash Bush, you'll be accused of it anyway.

Apparently they think whining about "Bush hatred" is an effective tactic - they don't care if we actually do it, that's besides the point. If they think its effective, they'll carry on even if Bush's name isn't mentioned.

In fact, he even blurts it out in his article: "If the Democrats will not provide copy, the media will generate their own."

Its cute seeing a ravenous right winger attack liberals for their closed minds, though. For fun!

Here's a bit that confuses me:

"In other words, Democrats voted for Kerry not because they liked him, but because they thought other people would. This is the logic of hate."

Uh, what? This is the illogic of Goldberg.

5. Bush Failed...
Let's face it, if Bush actually did a good job as president, democrats would have nothing to "hate." If there were WMD's in Iraq, If Bin Laden was captured, If the unemployment kept stable, if the Budget was balanced, If we were making progress in the "War on Terror," If the economy kept on growing, Bush would have over 70% of the vote. The reason why the race is this close isn't because of the democrats (I love kerry, he's going to be a great President, but he doesn't light people up competency is boring), but it's because of the incompetency of the Bush Administration.

I mean why in the hell did Bush go after the homosexuals? He won 25% of their vote last time, where else would the creationists go?

6. The repugs are worried because we all "hate" Bush. Whose fault is that?
They can whine all they want about the Dems hating Bush but all it does is add to the animosity we have for all the wingnuts.

Too bad wingnuts. You picked the guy not us. He isn't the uniter you wanted but he sure the hell has united the Dems!

7. They're not worried. They want middle America to feel bad ...

... about Democratic candidates, so they're trying to paint a picture that the Party is full of not-very-nice people.
