AWESOME letter to Dallas Morning News
http://unmedia.blogspot.com/2004/09/please-tell-me-this-didnt-happen.html

The background on this is, at a recent Dallas Cowboys preseason game, the Jumbotron on the Texas Stadium scoreboard showed some randomly selected fans and asked the crowd to cheer for who they thought should be voted "Fan of the Game." They showed a group of soldiers, some other people, and a traditionally dressed Muslim couple. The crowed cheered the soldiers and loudly booed the Muslims.

This is a letter to the editor of the Dallas Morning News from the Muslim man who was part of the couple booed by the Texas Stadium crowd.

Dear Mr. Blow,

I wanted to take a moment of your time to respond to your article in the DMN from Thursday, Sept. 2. You see, my wife and I were the Muslim couple that everyone including yourself is referring to from the Cowboy game.

My name is Hujefa Vora. I am a physician at Arlington Memorial Hospital. My wife is an elementary school teacher. Your article refers to us as a "Middle Eastern couple," when in fact I'm American-born and my wife is Canadian-born. We would refer to ourselves as Muslim-Americans.

My wife Insiyah and I have been loyal Cowboy fans for many years. We go to several games a season. I always wear my topi (religious hat) and my wife has a specially-designed and self-made Dallas Cowboy rida (covering). The Monday night game against the Titans was the first time we have ever made it to the JumboTron. We were elated.

In reality, we didn't hear the "booing and hissing" at the game. We were sitting in Section 24, and when the people around us saw our picture on the JumboTron, they cheered and applauded rabidly for us to win. That's really the great thing about all the Cowboy games we've been to. The fans have always embraced us as Cowboy fans. We have never felt "different."

1. Some people booed the traditionally dressed Muslims
Rather unsporting behaivor from those who'd booed.

Hmmm...sounds to me like he's just an American who happens to be Muslim. Or perhaps I should start refering to myself as a Pagan-American?

2. I can't believe the cowboys crew would do that
That's just begging for trouble. From what I read of the man's letter I have to give him alot of credit for not lashing out. He responded with alot of class. Good for him.

3. Well, he said he didn't hear the booing
He said all the people around him started cheering when he and his wife appeared on the Jumbotron, trying to win the "Fan of the Game" vote for them. He said it was only after he got home that he read in the papers that he and his wife were booed.

So, score it about fifty-fifty for Cowboys fans. Some decent people, some (probably) redneck Republican "USA! USA! USA!" jerks.

4. How sad....
I am ashamed of my fellow Americans. Such intolerance. Why in the world do we think of ourselves as such a great group of people still?
