Colin Powell: Insurgents will not succeed
Insurgents will not succeed
By Colin L. Powell

After 30 years of dictatorship and fear, Iraq is free. Saddam Hussein, a terrible dictator, is gone. There will be no more mass graves, no more programs pursuing weapons of mass destruction and no more invasions of Iraq's neighbors. We are making significant progress on President Bush's five-step plan to bring democracy and prosperity to Iraq.

Challenges clearly remain. Insurgents are trying to prevent democracy by murdering their fellow citizens and destroying the nation's infrastructure. But they will not succeed. Prime Minister Ayad Allawi and his government are courageous and determined, and the United States is steadfast in our support of their efforts. We will not go weak in the knees.

Our shared political, diplomatic and military strategy during the next several months will be to put places that are under insurgents' control firmly back under the control of the Iraqi interim government so that elections can be held.

In places such as Najaf and Kufa, the Iraqi government is back in control. And we are starting to work in Samarra, Fallujah and the other cities in the Sunni Triangle where there is too strong an insurgent presence. As U.S., coalition and Iraqi military forces put pressure on the fighters, the Iraqi government is reaching out to political, religious and ethnic leaders to persuade them that they must separate themselves from this kind of insurgent activity.

2. OK, Colin. If you had any credibility I might read this.
But you don't, on Iraq anyway, so it just goes into the rethug propoganda circular file.

What I'd like to know, "General" is how you and Tommy Franks can sleep at night?

3. Colin ignores history in lieu of BushCo lies
what a bunch of garbage. Iraq is free. Yeah right. Whatever. No more mass graves, except for the ones we're making for the THOUSANDS of innocent civllians that have died at the hands of US forces.

Pathetic. Mr. Powell, you belong in a cell in the Hague with your BFEE buddies, IMO.

8. but he does know better and that is what makes him
a perfect front man for the lies of the Bush team. A lot of people still hold him in really high regard and that's why he is so dangerous. When he lies a lot of people still believe him.

6. Are Powell's comments among the most absurd ever by a Secretary
of State if reports coming out of Iraq are reasonably accurate?

7. Is this your last wave of the flag before you bow out? You bargained....
...away your cred and integrity a long time ago. You knew when you told the world that Saddam has imminent WMDs that you were lying. You crossed your fingers and hoped for the best, but you were lying. You know it. I know it. People have died, Colin. Many, many people. As an old Army man, you've heard the reports, you've appraised the data. You know damned well that Iraq has turned out to be the mother of all cluster fucks. No hype and drama: every day the situation worsens, for everyone.

10. "Echoes of General Westmoreland"
Powell knows better than what he is writing and saying. He will be rewarded for his loyalty either in the next Neo Fascist Admin. or if Kerry wins, Powell will be offered a lucrative job in the private sector with a corp. with Right Wing leanings. He is insuring his future.

13. more about "mass graves"
Colin Powell is referring to the 140,000 dead Kurds Saddam buried.

Also, more than 1,000,000 people died when Saddam invaded Iraq during the 8-year Iran-Iraq War.

I agree we must stop all civilian casualties, as nothing helps recruit more terrorists than that.

But let us not turn a blind eye to what Saddam did ... that's what makes U.S. people trust the elephants more on foreign conflict.

15. Yeah, but...
We didn't use those Kurdish deaths (if Saddam indeed caused them, there's some doubt about that within intelligence circles) or the Iran war as reasons to fight him in Gulf War I. Of course not, since he was fighting with the weapons we gave him.

Now, 15 years later, we are trying to use that as a reason why the world is safer without him. It doesn't fly. If we were so concerned with Saddam's threat to the world, we would have gone after him in 1991. But Poppy Bush didn't, because he understood the mess we would leave behind if we did.
