I do feel a little better. Edit: I don't think that * will accomplish any of this. But, it's nice to hear some optimism.

Bush always says shit that sounds inspiring and meaningful and hopeful (Remember, 'I'm a uniter, not a Divider'?) ... its just a script to him.
And he's nowhere near insightful or deep enough to be considering his place in history.
We are in for 4 years of pure hell. :scared:

3. Not to be a party pooper, but |

I think the editorial is overly optimistic. There is nothing we know about Bush or his stooges that suggests he will be any less divisive than previously. The only glimmer of hope I have comes from the fact that since he doesn't have to start running for re-election, he doesn't have to appease the fundie nutjobs any more. On the other hand, there is evidence suggesting he IS a fundie nutjob, and there is also the likelihood that the party will have to continue to appease them to maintain power. I believe we will have to work very hard, and put a lot of pressure on the Dems in Congress to do everything they can to oppose these people, even if all they can do is filibuster.

Does anyone in their right mind truly believe that Bush will make an effort to reach across ANY political divide?

7. I agree that Bush will not unite anyone. I liked the editorial |
|
because it lays out for all to see just what Bush should do. We all know that he won't do it.

Dubya has repeatedly voiced support for something, then stabbed it in the back. How many times has he had photo-ops with groups and cut their funding the next day? He has been "bi-partisan" only when it served his purposes, then returned to viciousness.
He will have to go a long way down the road of reconciliation before I accept a word out of his mouth.

9. The NYT folks are not dumb |

Nor are they naive. They know that Bush will continue to do what he did throughout his first term--divide and conquer. But at this point, Bush had to act like a uniter if only for a few hours.

10. "accept the will of the majority"? slavery was once their will, too |
|
I reject that editorial outright. We should "accept the will of the majority?". How nice and simplistic and fascist.
--slavery was once the will of the majority in the USA --extermination camps for Jews, Gypsys, & political dissenters was once the will of the majority in Germany --no rights for women (including birth control) was once the will of the majority in the USA --no right to clean air, healthy food, etc. was once the will of the majority
We are in grave danger from this fascist un-elected administration, and now even the NY Times is caving in.
This is what happened in Hitler's Germany. Make no mistake about it. Its already begun and it may be unstoppable. Only a civil war or invasion from outside may be able to save us now.

11. While I would like nothing better than |
|
to believe that, I don't see any reason why I should. The one, very dim hope I have is that someone, perhaps his father or someone else who's opinion he regards and who is more senisble, advises him of the need to leave a good legacy. Or that he was pandering to the right for votes and really is not that much of a wacko (fat chance of that, eh?). But then again, I think Bush does feel that what he is doing is good and he will be admired for it. How the world and half of America feels didn't faze him in the last 4 years. Why should it now? I am just not very hopeful.
