Silver Lining in 2004 elections
Clifton Ross writes: Progressive North Americans who are focused exclusively on the US elections are
almost overwhelmingly depressed by the results. Some few will attribute the victory of the Republicans
(who not only took the presidency, but also expanded their power in the Senate) to fraud.
Others will attribute the defeat to the "dirty tricks" leading up to the voting, the long lines waiting
to vote in a nation geared to instant gratification or to other peripheral factors.
The reasons for the victory of the Republicans in US elections should be examined without the coloring of
political or personal prejudice. The fraud was minimal, the Republican terror was not widespread and it
appears that Bush was elected with a majority of the vote.
How can this be explained?
On election night, as George W. Bush appeared poised to take the presidency of the United States, I
reviewed scenes from "The Blind Spot," an interview with Traudl Junge, Hitler’s secretary. Explaining
Hitler’s phenomenal popularity, Traudl said "…if you value and respect someone, you don’t really want to
destroy the image of that person. You don’t want to know, in fact, if disaster lies behind the facade."
MORE HEREvery interesting view, read to the end. I will also post the author's recant to his own words above, and link from here.
