With the House and Senate under republican control, there is nothing stopping Bush from passing a Defence of Marriage Act. Nothing, that is, except the people...
Throughout history, the people of the United States of America have gotten together and spoken out against something that they thought was wrong. Even when those speaking out were in a vast minority, their protests have been answered. And they didn't give up until they were heard, even if this meant marching on D.C. itself.
We have hit another one of those times. With the impending threat of a ban on gay marriage, we must be ready to speak out. I don't know how many people will stand up for what is right, but I can only hope that I am not the only one.
It is for this reason that I am now saving money for bus tickets to Washington D.C.. And while one voice can not change things, perhaps millions can. When the time comes, we must all be ready to move. To speak out at all costs to defend the freedoms that this great country was based on.
As for the so-called "grass roots" campaign to stop a gay marriage ban... Such things are foolish. Great movements have always had leaders; someone to inspire the masses, someone to look up to, someone to lean against when times get tough. The gay rights movement has no such leader or leaders. We go on saying that all people who support the GBLT community must take a stand. But no one says where, when, or how. There is no one driving the bus. Yet.
And so I will tell you how and where. The when has yet to come, but it will, and we must all be ready for it. The how and where are simple enough. We must go to the heart of our great democracy- Washington D.C.- and we must protest. Our voices must be heard; scrawled on signs and shirts, shouted and sung, spoken through megaphones, and given to the media. The time of small organizations issuing little finger-shakings to racist politicians is over.

in the end fight as hard as we have to for justice. But, I think we should be careful the fights we pick. This amendment to the Constitution has about 0.000000002 chance of ever passing. He is throwing his Christofascists a bone. He's going (really) for flat tax to shift more burden to the middle and lower classes, and privitizing social security.
Where he absolutely MUST be stopped is in his appointment of radical judges. If he were to get the judges at all levels he wants no amount of progressive legislation passed for the next 40 years will matter as it will all be ruled unconstitutional.
Just imagine everything that has happened since FDR, then reverse it all.
