There are reasons Latins dislike the United States

BY MARY SANCHEZ
Knight Ridder Newspapers

(KRT) - And everywhere that George went the Latin people were sure to protest. Or so a rhyme could go for President Bush.In Chile last month, Bush was met by thousands of protesters; 15,000 people by some accounts. The opposition decried past, present and possible future wounds by the United States. They marched. They wore signs. A few even burned a U.S. flag.

Americans should not scratch their heads in dismay like they did after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. An almost infant-like naivete surrounded the country then as people asked: "Why do they hate us so much?"

The answer is that most of the world doesn't hate the American people. They hate our foreign policies. Especially ones that inflict harm on other countries, sometimes unwittingly Americans are shielded from understanding because we tend to focus on how the world gobbles up American pop culture.
(snip)

Take Chile. In 1973, a military coup overthrew elected President Salvador Allende. Guess who backed the coup? The United States. The man the United States helped to power, Gen. Augusto Pinochet, was responsible for thousands of people disappearing, tortures and other human rights violations.
(snip)

The same could be said for U.S.-backing of guerrilla troops that killed thousands in Guatemala. Pick a Latin country and there are similar stories.Current politics cause rifts as well. The general population in Mexico was largely opposed to Bush's re-election. Mostly, they were showing opposition to the war in Iraq. Dissatisfaction with NAFTA is another reason. NAFTA is not the economic savior for Mexico once promised.

1. It doesn't take a political science major
to understand why the US is so hated. We have continually backed dictators over democracies around the world, but especially in Latin America. And it continues-look at the stunt Bush tried to pull in ousting Hugo Chavez in Venezualia.

2. Don't they just "hate us for our freedoms" ???
Or is that just Muslim thinking?

Latins are loved in Florida. Gives us such a cheap labor force we don't have to outsource as much. Last week I even spoke to an internet rep that spoke perfect english.

3. The Mexicans
would show more courage if they would somehow get rid of their own Coca-Cola Cowboy-led government and then rebuild from the ground up in alliance with other populist Latin American governments such as those in Venezuela and Brazil.

Of course, their elections have been rigged a lot longer than ours have, so it is easier said than done. And their "oligarchy" is even more firmly entrenched than ours.

However, instead of staying to fight for a more democratic country, these same Mexicans come pouring across our southern border in search of jobs. I understand they need to make a living, but there will be no long-term solution to the living nightmare and hell that apparently is their country if they continually flee from it.

4. Mexico is not a living nightmare & hell for everybody there.
Have you ever actually visited?

The current President was the first non-PRI elected since the last revolution. That's the one that started in 1910 & killed from 1.9 to 3.5 million Mexicans.

Let's rebuild our own COCA-Cola Cowboy-led government before we dictate what others should do.

5. Been to Juarez
a long time ago, but no, I do not make a habit of going to Mexico.

Slightly off topic, I have read that the recent wave of Mexican immigrants, far from being its best and brightest, are actually the dregs of that society.

Take it for what it's worth. I don't think it bodes well. I am not trying to dictate to Mexico what to do. You must have me confused with the U.S. government, which DOES dictate to other governments all the time and takes steps to overthrow any who don't knuckle under to the PNAC agenda either through subterfuge or militarily ALL THE TIME.

I am just suggesting that the citizens of Mexico need to stay in the country they so love or, if they are going to migrate northward, at least do it legally.

Transmigration across the planet to whatever country one prefers at any given point in time is not legal practically anywhere that I know of or I'd already be packing up and moving back to my grandfather's home province of Ontario, Canada by now.
